Are You Fit Enough To Ski

Skiing may look like a fun sport but there is a certain amount of risk and a certain level of fitness required for it too. A new report has stated that almost a third of people taking the slopes for the first time this winter are not fit enough for the rigours of skiing.

The research has suggested that by taking the slopes with a level of fitness not up to skiing standard, people are putting themselves at risk of injury on their first time hitting the slopes.

The study was conducted by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and also reported that 39% of skiing enthusiasts who are regularly on the slopes have injured themselves at least once while on skis.

Looking After Yourself on a Skiing Holiday

Certainly skiing can be one of the more rigorous holiday pastimes, given the amount of time stood up, the speed that can be picked up and the impact on legs and knees after going over the lumps and bumps of the snow. It requires a certain amount of fitness and according to this research more people should be asking themselves if they are up to it.

The research will help form part of a winter sports checklist that offers guidance to skiers, and a leaflet on ‘How to have a safe and healthy holiday in the snow’. ABTA, conductors of this research, are working together with the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) who are responsible for looking after British citizens abroad.

Making the Most of Your Time on the Slopes

Another interesting thing the research showed is that around 31% of people going on skiing or snowboarding holidays do not take out adequate holiday insurance, specifically for skiing or snowboarding holidays.

Victoria Bacon, the head of communications at ABTA, said: “Like any activity that involves rigorous exercise you need to prepare yourself properly. By being physically prepared you can help ensure you remain injury and strain free and make the most of your time on the slopes.’
