New study finds that British skiers support speed cameras and breathalysers on ski slopes

Recent research published by More Than Insurance suggests that a large number of British skiers would be happy to see some policing or ruling on the slopes such as speed limit signs and breathalysers.

In the research carried out by more Than a massive 92% of skiers questioned said they favoured the idea of seeing safety measures akin to those used on the roads on the slopes.  Around half of the skiers pointed to ‘speed skiing’ and it’s rising popularity as one of the main reasons for their concerns.

Perhaps most shocking was that only 43% of skiers interviewed wore helmets when they skied, with slightly more than that suggesting that wearing a ski helmet should become compulsory.  Not only would this make skiing safer, but skiers could even run the risk of invalidating their winter sports insurance cover if they don’t wear a helmet and end up injured.

Reports and research suggest that the younger generation of skiers and snowboarders don’t see skiing helmets and the like as ‘sexy’ and will therefore forgo such protective measures.

More Than’s Matt Pernet had this to say on the subject:’It’s perhaps surprising how many skiers would like to see motoring style deterrents, checks and punishments introduced on the piste.’Aside from the potentially life changing consequences of dangerous skiing, if someone is responsible for an accident and has been drinking they won’t be covered on their insurance policy.’

So would you like to see such measures introduced on the slopes?  Surely getting a ticket for skiing too fast would ruin anyone’s holiday?  Or do you believe that this is a necessary step to protect skiers and to enable skiing to continue as the enjoyable hobby, sport or past time of millions of skiers and snowboarders across the globe?.
